Moiré patterns in electron micrographs of a bacterial membrane.

چکیده

A regular hexagonal array of morphological units is observed in negatively stained preparations of a membrane from the surface of the spherical bacterium Micrococcus radiodwans. Fragments of this membrane are frequently folded so that structural details from two or more layers are superimposed. The appearance of the resulting moiri patterns is illustrated and the need to be aware of the possibility of the formation of these patterns in similar biological specimens is stressed.

Kinetic precipitation of solution-phase polyoxomolybdate followed by transmission electron microscopy: a window to solution-phase nanostructure.

This study aimed to elucidate the structural nature of the polydisperse, nanoscopic components in the solution and the solid states of partially reduced polyoxomolybdate derived from the [Mo132] keplerate, [(Mo)Mo5]12-[Mo2 acetate]30. Designer tripodal hexamine-tris-crown ethers and nanoscopic molybdate coprecipitated from aqueous solution. These microcrystalline solids distributed particle rad...

Isolation of Herpetosiphon giganteus and Ultrastructure Analysis by Electron Microscopy

Herpetosiphon giganteus is a filamentous gliding bacterium. Gliding motility is the movement of the cells over surfaces without the aid of flagella. The mechanism responsible for bacterial gliding motility has not been known and there are only a few data on Herpetosiphon giganteus. The aim of this study was to observe the ultrastructure and negative staining of isolated strains of Herpetosiphon...

Electron microscopic characterization of silver nanowire arrays.

Characterization of Silver Nanowire Arrays Hong et al. (1) reported that they had successfully produced arrays of single-crystal silver nanowires (of diameter 0.4 nm) formed in an ambient solution phase inside the pores of selfassembled calix[4]hydroquinone (CHQ) nanotubes. These nanowires, it was suggested, existed as coherently oriented three-dimensional arrays (1). The experimental identific...

Analysis of freeze-fracture electron micrographs by a computer-based technique.

A procedure is described for deriving a numerical characterization of membrane particle patterns revealed in freeze-fracture electron micrographs. Rectangular coordinates of the particles are obtained with high precision by means of an electronic digitizing device. These coordinates are fed into a large computer and analyzed in terms of (alpha) a local particle density function in terms of vari...

Evolution of Moiré Profiles from van der Waals Superstructures of Boron Nitride Nanosheets

Two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) superstructures, or vdW solids, are formed by the precise restacking of 2D nanosheet lattices, which can lead to unique physical and electronic properties that are not available in the parent nanosheets. Moiré patterns formed by the crystalline mismatch between adjacent nanosheets are the most direct features for vdW superstructures under microscopic ima...
